Notes

The monument was designed by Union County College (UCC) architecture student Lennox Brown of Newark. The UNICO Project Committee chose from nearly 100 designs submitted by Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School students, UCC students and many other local artists. Mr. Brown's design was selected for its uniqueness, unlike many of the traditional bust designs of Columbus that were submitted.
Donated by the local chapter of Unico National, the Italian American Club of Scotch Plains, and the Knights of Columbus - Reverend John S. Nelligan Council 5730.

Close to this monument is a memoral stone in the pavements with the following inscription:

Time Capsule.
Honoring Christopher Columbus and keeping
faith with the Italo-American community
emigrating to the township of Scotch Plains
in the County of Union and State of New Jersey
in the 19th and 20th centuries from
Montazzoli, Italy, Province of Chieti.
To be opened on Columbus Day in the year 2050.
